Ayrton Senna’s 1981 DAP kart will be going under the hammer as UK auction house Bonhams will hold its 2015 Les Grandes Marques du Monde au Grand Palais auction event in Paris on February 5, 2015 at 2:00PM CET (Central European Time).
Before Senna made it big in the F1 scene, he first started out competing in karting competitions. This particular DAP kart was new at the time and was specifically prepared to suit Senna’s preferences. Senna used it during the 1981 World Championship held in Parma, Italy; his last kart competition before fully committing to the Formula Ford 1600 series.
A private owner bought it from DAP without a motor, but they were able to find a similar engine that Senna used during the race. Categorized by the auction house in ‘as new’ condition, the kart was only used 2 hours since it was last driven by Senna. The successful bidder will also get a copy of the book ’50 Ans de Karting’ which features Senna and his #9 kart.
Bonhams estimated that it may fetch between EUR 24,000 – EUR 28,000 (about PhP 1.2 million – PhP 1.4 million).
